P, Geisel School of Medicine Interim Dean , and Professor of Biological Sciences have been inducted into the in recognition of outstanding achievement.

The academy “promotes scholarship and honors outstanding achievement in the arts, sciences, and learned professions.” The organization also supports promising young scholars.

President Beilock, a renowned cognitive scientist known for her contributions to the understanding of performance under pressure, is the author of more than 120 scholarly papers and two books. She was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine this year, and last year to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. In 2017, she received the Troland Award from the National Academy of Sciences for her pioneering work on anxiety and performance in high-stress situations.

“I’m honored to be recognized by an academy that celebrates intellectual courage and the pursuit of truth across disciplines,” Beilock says. “At Dartmouth, we strive to foster independent thinking, where curiosity, rigor, and open exchange lead to new discoveries and deeper understanding.”

Leach, a professor of molecular and systems biology, surgery, and medicine, is former director of the Dartmouth Cancer Center, and currently serves as interim dean of Geisel School of Medicine. His laboratory has a long track record of research productivity in the field of pancreatic cancer biology and is known for establishing important links between pancreatic development and pancreatic cancer using both mouse and zebrafish model systems. Leach is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Leach says, “One of the most rewarding aspects of being in the later stages of an academic career is being the recipient of honors that reflect the collective accomplishments of our entire scientific community. I am extremely honored to be elected as a member of the academy and consider this to be something of a ‘lifetime achievement award’ for all members of the Leach Lab—past, present, and future. It is gratifying to see Dartmouth faculty so well represented among this year’s inductees—I am thrilled to be inducted alongside these distinguished colleagues.”

Guerinot is a professor of biological sciences and Ronald and Deborah Harris Professor in the Sciences at Dartmouth. A widely published molecular geneticist, her principal expertise and research focus is on the metal transport and regulation of gene expression by metals. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society of Plant Biologists—receiving the society’s Stephen Hales Prize and Charles Reid Barnes Life Membership award.

“I am honored and excited to have our scientific achievements recognized. Every step of the way was powered by the incredible undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and scientists who brought their talent and tenacity to the lab,” Guerinot says.

Beilock, Leach, and Guerinot are among who reflect the independence of mind the AASL strives to honor. Academy members include author Salman Rushdie and Harvard psychology professor Steven Pinker.
